Sally Way of Alamo, California died
peacefully at home at the age of 74 with her husband by her side on
April 6, 2004. She was born in Mount Vernon, South Dakota to James
B. Dougherty and Bea Smiley Jordan on April 3, 1930, and raised by
her grandmother, Bernice Smiley. She graduated valedictorian from Mt
Vernon High School, and attended the University of Michigan. She
married her grade school sweetheart, Howard Way, on July 18, 1948.
They moved to eight states and sixteen different towns before
settling in Walnut Creek, California in 1963 with their three
daughters. She made a beautiful home for her family that hosted all
the neighborhood parties, welcomed Santa long after her children
were grown, and hosted the office Christmas party until the company
was too big to fit in the house. She could always be found ironing
in the kitchen after school where she would listen to the daily
traumas and triumphs of her daughters and often a few neighborhood
children. In 1975, Sally and Howard moved to Alamo where she studied
child development at Diablo Valley College and later enjoyed working
at I. Magnin in Walnut Creek.
Sally's primary focus was the happiness of her family and friends.
She also loved baby deer, books, old movies, bridge and her purse.
Her sense of adventure led her to boating on Lake Powell, safaris in
Africa, and recently the rumble of Harley rallies. Her passion for
animals brought her a rascally horse, often four or five collies at
a time and always a variety of cats.
Sally is survived by her husband of 55 years, Howard; her three
daughters, JoBea and her husband Ben Holt, Vaughn and her husband
John Boyd, and Betsy and her partner Jeff Heath; her grandchildren,
Annie, Sammy and Janet Holt, Ryan, Sarah, Chris, Angela and Nick
Boyd and Kathleen Ellsworth; her sisters Gretchen Jordan, Judy
Jordan and Michele Dougherty, and brothers, Tom Jordan and Jim C.
Dougherty.
Burial and memorial service were held in Mount Vernon, South Dakota
on June 12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the
Southwest Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Foundation.
